The Global Triathlon: Status Update

November 22, 2009

Over the next few weeks I’m going to put up some posts on more specific parts of the trip but this is a short overview of how everything is right now:

Training: Training is going well and happy with where my swimming technique is at. I’m not doing any training for the cycle and run legs due to the amount of time I’m going to be spending at sea-any training would be lost. I’ve trained in the English Channel, Jersey, Ireland, the North Sea and Tenerife in all different kinds of conditions and am now feeling pretty comfortable in even quite big swells. Unfortunately I’m having to spend more and more time searching for sponsorship so my fitness is suffering slightly.

Sponsorship: I’ve had quite a few low level amounts of sponsorship come in and had a few really good leads with bigger, title sponsors. These next two months are vital though.

Logistics: Recently I’ve found the ideal ship to support me while I’m swimming the Atlantic. She’s an expedition ship called Ice Maiden, she sleeps ten and can hold all the food and fuel we’ll need for the 3-4month crossing. My route planning is going well for the cycle and run with most of it set in stone now. The Bering Straits is still a huge stumbling block but I’m working on various ways of crossing it.

Press and PR: On this front the journey is really starting from now. This site will provide a great home for anyone looking for information but it’s going to be key to really get the trip out there in the public consciousness. This is a huge trip with a huge heart and I feel the story needs spreading.

Fantastic! I was going to suggest maybe hang gliding across the Bering Strait - and I'll be following you, on my website etc. You'll suddenly find you have lots more relatives - I'm one of your ma's cousins.

Dan, yet another mammoth adventure. Disappointed you won't be going anywhere near Ryan's Irish Pub, Accra or Beachcomber Island Fiji but still some great countries and this time, I'll make sure I'm somewhere nearby.
