Thursday Thriller: Fish Food

July 29, 2010

I’m not here to preach and I’m certainly no hippy but today’s Thursday Thriller is a Thursday Shocker. I’ve got three short trailers for you and I reckon everyone should go on and watch the full programmes.

The basic message I want to get across from all of these clips is lets not eat what we can’t sustainably farm. We can farm cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens and even deer but we can’t really farm fish. Most fish farms use other smaller fish to feed to higher value fish-salmon etc. I know they’re not cuddly panda bears or polar bears but we’re going to need these fish in the future and while we in the west will be fine it’s the coast dwelling people in the developing world that will suffer.

If we just have one less portion of fish each month then it’ll make a difference. Ask where it’s from and how it’s caught-know what’s endangered!

End of the Line

This is the film that really woke me up to the problem. My two favourite lines from this are “We are fighting a war against the fish…and we are winning!” and “People always ask me-where have all the fish gone? and I tell them, we have eaten them!”

The Cove

This clip is about the smaller but still significant problem of dolphin culling in Japan:

Whale Like Me

This is a passionate plea to break the stalemate over whaling. An interesting look at the problem from both sides.
