Thursday Thriller: Sci-Fi

Sci Fi, and space in particular, is my main guilty pleasure. Below are three amazing videos, one shows some guys abseiling down into an active volcano, the second show’s a couple of men building a casing in their shed to drop 200paper airplanes from 36500metres in the atmosphere and the last one shows a couple of students sending a camera up into space. Amazing.

Volcano:

You will never see anyone closer to a volcano than this. The team in Vanuatu abseiled 500 metres into the Marum Volcano on Ambrym Island to the very edge of a huge lake of violently boiling lava. Nut Bar.

Paper Planes from Space:

These random guys launched 200 planes into space with the help of a helium-filled balloon. Each plane is carrying a memory card with a message that someone, somewhere in the world has uploaded. The planes were dropped from 36,500 metres over Berlin, Germany. You can find out more about teir project here: http://www.projectspaceplanes.com/

Out of this world video:

In December 2010, Alex Baker and Chris Rose sent a weather balloon with a small camera attached into near space. This film documents the process from building to ascent to recovery. It’s ace.

Thursday Thrillers: Space

Space

Space is quite literally, the final frontier. I’m not saying there’s no more to explore here on earth but there’s just more to explore in Space. Only six manned spaceships have landed on the moon. 12 people have walked on the moon out of 24 who have landed there. Last weekend over 300people summited Everest. Space is the future of exploration.

Recently, Barrack Obama cut funding to NASA and opened up NASA for commercial use-so now, as with most expeditions it’s money and funding that is stopping people not opportunity. We’ve landed spacecraft on Mars, the next step is a manned mission. I can’t think of anything more exciting then stepping foot on another planet-flying for months from Earth and being one of the first to step foot on Mars. To be honest I’d be happy with the moon-the whole concept of space travel is just awe inspiring. Going to the Moon or Mars for us today is the equivalent of Scott and his team setting off for Antarctica and the South Pole. So much is unknown and if you get in trouble it’s you that has to fix it-there is no emergency evacuation. That’s the definition of adventure.

The three clips this week are spellbinding. One is images from Mars, the other is the preparation and launch of a space shuttle and the other is a few blokes in a shed from the North of England trying to put a Robin Reliant into space. Brilliant.

1) Mars

Not that a thrilling video to watch until you understand that it is photos from another planet.

2) Space Shuttle Launch

This takes a while to load but the preparation process and the launch at the end are well worth the wait.

3) Robin Reliant Space Shuttle

Some northern blokes and a Robin Reliant. Genius.

This article from BBC Focus suggests a few ways we could live in space. Sadly it seems we’re mainly going to be using space for mining.
