Thursday Thriller: Run, Bike, Ski

Run.

Run around town. Jump off walls. Jump over railings.

Bike.

Mountain bike. Out at one with nature. Pedal across the grassland. Get absolutely smashed by a passing deer.

Ski.

Ski about. Ski around. Start an avalanche. Ski off a cliff.

And finally something a bit different…

Not sure why I really like this. I love the ocean and I really like tea-maybe that’s it!

Autumn is coming, the rugby World Cup is coming and it’s coming to the end of a hectic wedding season-these are the three videos that are rocking my world this week:

Reel Rock Film Tour 2011:

Another gem from the Reel Rock guys-I especially like the SkAndy (Sketchy Andy) guy.

Flash Mob Haka:

Tomorrow is the first game of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. It’s in New Zealand which as much as it burns me to say it have been historically the best team in the world by some margin. The catch is-they choke at World Cups! The indigenous people of New Zealand, the Maori’s, are incredible rugby players and rugby seems have a special place culturally for them. This is a video of 50 young Maori leaders from all round New Zealand doing the most amazing flash mob Haka.

The Wedding Pounce:

This is a clip of my mate Dusko using all the stealth that he’s built up over ten years as one of Britains best helicopter fighter pilots to attempt a WWE off the top ropes slam on another mate of mine Walshy (who’s sly avoidence of danger in his life has made him a top banker).

WARNING: This is completely inappropriate wedding behaviour!

Thursday Thriller: Wet and Wild!

This week’s Thursday Thriller is all about getting wet and wild. The first video may look to the average viewer like a man failing to commit suicide over a 189ft high waterfall-but it’s not. It’s Tyler Bradt pushing back the boundaries of what’s possible in a kayak (and breaking his wrist and ribs!). The second video may also look like a masochists dream as it’s all about a man swimming with jellyfish. These jellyfish however are special-they don’t sting and they live in an isolated body of salt water on Eli Malk Island in the Republic of Palau.

Wet and Wild I:

Wet and Wild II:

Does anyone fancy snorkelling with thousands of jellyfish in a lake that below 50ft contains lethal levels of hydrogen sulphide? Palau is the place for you.

If you think you can’t kayak off waterfalls or swim with jellys, or maybe you think you’re not brave enough or tough enough-then this kid disagrees:

I would follow that kid into battle anyday.

Thursday Thriller: Mud and Air

This week’s Thursday Thriller is all about getting high and getting dirty.

Getting High:

Sky diving and B.A.S.E. jumping has always facinated me. Maybe it’s the thrill of freefalling or the possible dangers of a parachute fail but there’s something about trying to fly that’s got me hooked. We’ve had a couple of Thursday Thrillers about speed flying and B.A.S.E. jumping before but I don’t think there’s a better video out there to truly capture what it’s like to float/plummet towards the earth:

These days it seems all the rage to enter ridiculously masochistic races that not only involve running long distances but also being stung by nettles/dunked into ice water filled tunnels/jump over burning bushes/get shot at but I can’t see the point-if the challenge itself isn’t big enough without adding in torture then maybe you should up the challenge? This race however looks like the best thing ever. I wish every day was a 10km run through mud puddles and down water slides!

Thursday Thriller: Climbing Where You Ain’t Supposed To…

This weeks Thursday Thriller is all about rock climbing. Below are three stunning videos. The first is from Cuba where climbing is illegal, the second is on the ridiculously difficult overhanging Desert Gold crack near Las Vegas and the last one is climbing on Mount Asgard on Baffin Island in the Arctic circle.

The Life of Leo

Leo works on his family farm in the morning and climbs in the afternoon. Sounds pretty easy? No, not when climbing is illegal in Cuba and he faces police harassment or worse just for climbing some rock!

“Vegas Gold” Desert Gold 5.13a

This is climbing superman Cedar Wright climbing in Nevada. Sounds pretty easy? No, not when the crack he climbing goes beyond vertical and overhangs to horizontal. Mental.

The Asgard Project

Mount Asgard is this mythical finger of rock jutting out in the high arctic. It doesn’t sound easy and it’s ridiculously hard. It’s freezing cold, almost vertical and incredibly remote. This is Leo Houlding and his mates sky diving into the base, climbing up and BASE jumping off the top (yeah, you read that right).

Thursday Thriller: TED Talks

TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It’s a pretty simple philosophy. It started in 1984 as a conference for Technology, Entertainment and Design but has now spread into all walks of life from science, arts, politics, global issues, architecture, music and more. The speakers vary from presidents to professors, from entrepreneurs to entertainers.

I warn you. Do not start browsing the videos on this website.

You’ll soon realise that everything you thought you knew is changing and that there are incredible people out there doing amazing things right now! I’ve lost days to this website and come out tired, broken but massively inspired and informed.

These are four of my favourites in no particular order:

Michael Pawlyn talks about how we can use nature as a blue print for architecture. I love the desert greenhouse idea!

Sir Ken Robinson talks about the need for a revolution in education from a standardised fast food modelof education that we have now to an agricultural ethos where schools try to create an environment for growth and creativity. It’s really funny, much funnier than I’ve just described it as!

Rory Sutherland does his incredible “Life lessons from an ad man” talk about adding value to society and how marketing controls us! Is an increase in percieved value as important/satifying as an increase in ‘real’ value.

Sugata Mitra talks about the problem with getting the best teachers into the areas they’re needed the most i.e. the worst schools/the worst areas of the world.

This week’s Thurday Thriller is all about big air! From snowboarding to rope swings to the original bungee jumps. These guys are going big and then going home!

This weeks Thursday Thriller is all about Speed Flying. Now it’s not what I thought it would be-it’s got nothing to do with mechanical flight it’s actually about using a parachute to fly/ski around impossible mountains. Right, that introduction didn’t really do it justice-have a look at this:
