This weeks Thursday Thriller is all about River Surfing. But surfing needs waves and rivers don’t have any? Wrong. You can surf tidal bores!

A tidal bore is a tidal phenomenon in which the leading edge of the incoming tide forms a wave (or waves) of water that travel up a river against the direction of the river’s current.

The biggest tidal bore in the world is on the Qiantang River in China and can be up to 9metres high and reach speeds of 40kmph! The biggest in Britain is on the River Severn although this is often broken up so as not to damage the river banks.

This video clip below was filmed ‘somewhere in Indonesia’ and is on a tidal bore that is said to have Seven Ghosts! These Seeven Ghosts are consecutive tubes formed along the front of the wave. Watch it, be amazed.
