I’m from England and man alive do we love talking about the weather! There’s an old saying that goes ‘If you don’t like the weather then just wait five minutes, (unless you want it to be sunny then go to Spain)’.

This Thursday Thriller is going to be the first of two parts on weather. This week it’s going to be about land based big weather! I think everyone will remember watching Twister and instantly wanting to head off chasing tornadoes off through middle America and it was this film that got me excited about the weather. In England it gets quite warm in summer and quite cold in winter and rains a bit and it a bit windy all very middling and boring. When I was 21 I taught rock climbing in a summer camp in Pennsylvania in the US and experience some real weather-a huge thunderstorm! Lightening like we at the battle of the Somme and gushing rain to boot! It really puts our drizzle and cloudy skies to shame. My second big weather experience was being caught up in a flash flood in Italy on the first bike ride but the most amazing time I’ve had to date was riding along in the Congo dodging around the small forest fires that had been lit to clear the ground when two small twisters touched down about a mile away, I saw them meandering over to a fire and then turn black and orange as the sucked the fire and ash up to a few hundred metres. Five minutes later it started to rain down black rain-truly surreal!
