From speaking to Dan I know that Benoit was a big inspiration for him to attempt this as the first leg of his Global Triathlon.

I believe that Benoit Lecomte made the first known solo trans-Atlantic swim, covering nearly 4,000 miles (6,400 kilometers) from Massachusetts to France in 73 days
