Thursday Thriller: Ueli Steck

If you climb rock faces, you know Ueli Steck. If you’re an ice climber, you know Ueli Steck. If you’re a high altitude mountaineer, you know Ueli Steck. He’s a speed climbing machine.

This is him nailing the speed record on the Heckmair Route on the Eiger in 2hours 47minutes:

“On the one hand you have in your mind you have to move fast, but on the other you know exactly that if I do a mistake-I fall off.”

“You make progress, thats what it’s all about. You want to have progress in your life.”

N.B. 2011: 20 April: Daniel Arnold (Switzerland) solos the face in 2 hours 28 minutes, using the fixed ropes on the Hinterstoisser Traverse. Arnold was 19 minutes faster than Ueli Steck in 2008, but Steck climbed the route entirely without aid and, unlike Arnold, completed the route in the official winter season.
